This small island many times referred to as “The Rock” was developed with facilities for a lighthouse, a military prison, a military fortification and a federal prison from 1933 until 1963.In 1972 this island became a national recreation area and received designation as a National Historic landmark in 1986.

It is a public aquarium located in San Francisco. The aquarium is focused on local aquatic animals from San Francisco Bay and neighboring waters. The Aquarium has skates, bat rays and thousands of other animals including flatfish, rockfish, eels, gobies, kelpfish, prickle backs, wrasse, jonquil and sturgeons. The aquarium has over 50 sharks.
